These wonderfully-eroded granite monoliths seemingly appear out of nowhere, as you drive through the Pike National Forest in Colorado along the Gold Camp Road. Rather than paint the old railroad grade road, I imaged the steam-powered train crossing a tressle (now burried under the gravel). History is so present in this area that it affects me while painting. Just a short distance from this locale is one of the old train tunnels. Hardy souls can still drive all the way to Colorado Springs on the rest of the railroad grade.
